Why builders are installing them
Ventless heat pump dryers have become standard in new condo buildings around downtown Everett and in newer developments near Mukilteo, where there is no room to run traditional exterior ducting. They recycle warm air through a heat exchanger instead of expelling it outside, which makes them a good fit for stacked laundry closets and mid-rise units.
The trade-off is that they dry more slowly and are far less forgiving of neglected maintenance than a conventional vented dryer. A machine that took two hours to dry a load when new can stretch to three or four cycles once the condenser or filters get dirty.
The usual suspects when cycles run long
